Mahiro and Conversation (まひろと共通の話題, Mahiro To Kyoutsuu No Wadai) is Chapter 24 of Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister!. It was originally published on Pixiv on January 26, 2019.
Summary[]
Mahiro is excited about a new video game she just got, but is disappointed when her friends don't share her enthusiasm.
Plot[]
Mahiro opens a box and chuckles, saying that even she doesn't know how long she's waited for this. She's ordered a new game called Lost Quest IX, saying that the super popular RPG series is finally back after five years. Mahiro decides that she'd better beat it now before it gets spoiled online for her, and notes that playing for two days straight should do it. Mahiri suddenly barges in and tells Mahiro to go to bed as she has school tomorrow. Mahiro cries and realizes that she forgot.
The next day in class, Mahiro writes down her planned skill combos and battle strategies for the game in her notebook instead of taking notes. She notes that she is still frustrated that she can't play the game in one sitting, but notes that daydreaming is nice as well calling it nostalgic. That being said, she still can't wait to play it, fidgeting with excitement. Momiji sees this, and thinking that Mahiro has to pee she asks to use the restroom and winks at Mahiro. Mahiro doesn't know what she means, and Momiji is shocked that she misinterpreted that.
When the four eat lunch later, Momiji tells Mahiro that she is hard to read. Mahiro is confused, and Momiji explains that she was sure that Mahiro had to pee but was shy about asking, since she was fidgeting so much. Mahiro understands what she means and apologizes for that, explaining that she just really wanted to get home and play her new game. Mahiro expresses praise for Lost Quest IX, calling it the long awaited new entry in the series. Momiji and Miyo just smile before admitting that they really don't know that much about it.
Mahiro is surprised, as the is is the legendary Lost Quest series, and is amazed that people this age apparently don't care about it. Asahi remarks that she knows that series, and Mahiro gets excited. Asahi says that she used to watch her older brother play it, and Mahiro is a left bit disappointed. Miyo notes that boys really like video games, and Asahi agrees which makes Mahiro scared. She remembers that all her friends are girls, and that she forgot that they were once different genders. After coming to terms with this idea, Mahiro realizes that talking about video games must be boring to them and decides to find something more interesting to talk about.
Mahiro struggles to come up with anything, and wonders out loud what girls talk about anyway. Momiji is confused, and Mahiro is shocked that she said that out loud. Mahiro claims that she has been by herself for so long that she's not sure of that. Momiji says that Asahi likes talking about sports, but admits that it's not girly enough. Asahi gets a bit offended by that statement, but turns around and tells Mahiro to just talk about whatever she wants. Ashai continues by telling Mahiro that she should tell them about her game, saying that it's cute to hear her all fired up about it.
Mahiro is touched by this and begins petting Asahi's hair from behind calling her a good friend. Asahi is surprised but enjoys it, while Momiji is shocked. She stands up, agreeing with Asahi and the girls enjoy a group hug.
Miyo remarks that there is one things that girls like to talk about: romance. She gets aroused just thinking about it after seeing what just happened. Mahiro notices Miyo's expression and admits that she thinks that it's a bit different for Miyo. Miyo is left confused by that answer.
Later in class, Mahiro notes that everyone is so nice, and that she can't wait to tell them more. She still wishes though that she could chat back and forth about it though. She then hears Yuta and Minato talking about the game and peeks over to their tables asking if they are talking about it. The two boys are suprised to see Mahiro and further suprised when she confirms that she also plays Lost Quest. Mahiro apologizes for butting in, but Yuta says that it is cool.
Mahiro asks which character they picked for their companion, and Yuta says that he chose the guy with the weird name. Mahiro notes that it is so much easier to talk with other boys. Mahiro tells them that she is glad that they know what she is talking about. She asks them which game in the series is their favorite, declaring that she believes that it has to be hers; Lost Quest VI. Minato is surprised by that and admits that he hasn't played that one. Mahiro calls him a poser, after which Minato points out that the game came out before he was born. Mahiro feels this like an in-game attack and collapses on the ground all gloomy realizing just how old she feels.
Momiji asks Mahiro what is wrong, and Mahiro looks up with tears in her eyes claiming that it's nothing. Momiji gets alarmed and calls over Satsuki and Minori who call the boys lowlifes for making a girl cry and hit the two on the head.
Mahiro apologizes to them for that later. Yuta notes that Mahiro is pretty nice and Minato agrees. This experience has managed to increase Mahiro's overall charm level among her classmates.
