Onii-chan wa Oshimai! Wiki

Mihari Oyama (緒山 (おやま) みはり, Oyama Mihari) is the child prodigy younger sister of Mahiro Oyama. Having skipped ahead several grades to go to college at Yotsuba University, she developed a drug that turned her older brother into a middle-school aged girl as part of her "Onii-chan Rehabilitation Project". She is voiced by Kaori Ishihara in the anime.

Appearance[]

Mihari is a high-school aged girl with a very athletic and trim figure. She has dark brown hair that is tied up in the back with a red bows forming long stranded pigtails (in the anime, these pigtails also contain purple streaks). She also has additional stands running along the sides of her face and bangs, the middle bang containing a gold hairclip that was once given to her by Mahiro during her first year of middle school as a reward for doing well on a test.

She is almost always seen wearing a signature red button-up top and brown skirt with a brown belt around her waist and a gold medallion around her neck. She also almost always wears a white lab coat on top of her outfit wherever she goes, regardless of the social situation. In the spring, she switches to a lab coat with short sleeves.

Despite having outgrown her middle school uniform, it is shown that she is still small enough to just barely fit into it, indicating that she hasn't grown much since then.

Personality[]

Mihari is an intelligent girl whose world revolves around her research and her brother. She took exams in her first year of high school and was able to skip ahead to college, showing off a great deal of intelligence.

Ever since she was young, Mihari has adored Mahiro. The two were once as close as any siblings could be. He protected her and gave her rewards for doing well which pushed to excel. Even though Mahiro started isolating himself after feeling inferior to her, Mihari never stopped caring about him and began her research specifically to make him into a functioning member of society again.

Mihari has since taken on the role of an older sister to Mahiro, fulfilling a longstanding desire to have a younger sister. She spoils Mahiro and pushes her into situations to prevent her from backsliding. All of this has brought the two of them closer together and renewed their close relationship. Mihari now expects herself to be the caregiver, and as such is brought to tears of happiness when Mahiro does something nice for her like she did when they were younger.

Despite her intelligence, a running gag is Mihari's lack of fashion sense as well an inability to live up to her own ideals. She has pushed Mahiro into dressing in a more feminine fashion, but she does not. She wears the same outfit constantly and shows no skill for dressing herself up even if she helps Mahiro with it (though it has been shown that this is partially due to her own idea that she looks terrible in cute outfits despite everyone's attempt to convince her otherwise). This has led to Mahiro calling on Kaede to help her to no avail. Mihari also has no tolerance for alcohol and drinking even a small amount (or even just smelling some) will cause her to instantly get drunk after which she starts kissing all girls in the vicinity. A single sip from a low alcohol drink on new-years day caused her to get wasted and let to her kissing Mahiro, Kaede, and (supposedly) Miyo on the lips. Later on, she started kissing her labmates Arika, Tsubasa, and Chitose after smelling the scent of sake.

Mihari is also afraid of thunder, a trait that she shares with Kaede. When she was younger, Mahiro would always comfort her by sitting close to her with a blanket wrapped around them.

In a strange way, everything that she has ever done in life has happened because of Mahiro. Even after Mahiro started isolating himself in his room, Mihari wanted to find a way to help him. After Kaede mentioned how makeup and sharp outfits can help someone feel better about themselves and gain more confidence, Mihari got the idea to turn Mahiro into a young girl as a way to reintegrate him into society. Shortly after, she took advanced placement tests to skip ahead to college to begin research that would allow her to achieve her goals, ignoring any other friends or social standings that she would've otherwise enjoyed. This showcases how much Mihari has always cared about Mahiro, as she has revolved her entire life around her.

Relationships[]

Early Life[]

Mihari was born seventeen years before the start of the series, as the second child of Matsuri Oyama and her husband. The status of her father is currently unknown as he has not been named or made an appearance in the present day, though it appears that he was still living with his family during the time when Mahiro and Mihari were in elementary school.

When Mihari was four years old, she was at home with Mahiro when a thunderstorm struck. She became scared and began to cry and call for Mahiro while hugging an Oshima plush toy. Mahiro immediately comforted her and wrapped a blanket around the two of them telling her that it was okay. Mahiro suggested that she get some sleep with him next to her, and although Mihari was still nervous she soon drifted off to sleep.

Three years later, when Mihari was seven years old and just starting elementary school, she, Mahiro, and Matsuri took a trip to Oshimaen amusement park. During the trip, Mahiro played a shooting game and won a prize which turned out to be an Oshima stuffed animal. Mahiro gave it to Mihari who immediately hugged it and fell in love with it. Later in the day, she became sepearated from Mahiro and Matsuri which caused her to start crying until Mahiro found her again.

Six years later, Mihari started attending Yotsuba University Affiliated Junior High School during the same year that her homeroom teacher Mari Nishinomiya also started working at the school. She quickly became friends with a girl in her class named Kaede Hozuki. When Mihari did well on a test, Mahiro gave her a hairclip as a reward and Mihari fell in love with it immediately, deciding that she needed to do it more often to get more praise from Mahiro. The next day at school, Kaede noticed Mihari wearing the hairclip and Mihari explained how she got it. Mihari asked Kaede if she had any siblings, and Kaede mentioned having a little sister. Mihari called that wonderful, saying that if she had a little sister she would spil her rotten and dress her up in all sorts of outfits. Kaede pointed out that it only works like that if the little sister likes what you pick for her, as her sister was a tomboy and couldn't do that. Kaede added though that her sister was awfully cute though, adding that she bakes cookies for her and stuff. Mihari was amazed that Kaede could cook and asked her to teach her, with Kaede agreeing. Mihari then suggested that they do it after school that day, much to Kaede's surprise. Mihari smiled, thinking how happy Mahiro would be once he tasted the cookies. Baking cookies for Mahiro soon became a regular hobby of hers after this.

Shortly after this, Mihari joined the track team at the middle school.

Sometime after this, Mihari met up with Kaede at the Neon to do some clothes shopping. She apologized for keeping her waiting, though Kaede was shocked by the fact that Mihari was wearing track pants under a skirt. Mihari said that she was doing it because it was so cold today and claimed that everyone at school wore them. Kaede claimed that she couldn't wear stuff like that out there and pulled the pants down much to Mihari's surprise. Mihari asks why she did that with so many people around, but Kaede insisted that she was the one who should be embarassed. She asked Mihari how she can be this clueless about fashion, to which Mihari pointed out that that is why she asked Kaede to help her. Later, the two left the store with some new clothes. Mihari called Kaede a lifesaver, saying that she never would've known where to start. Kaede realized that even Mihari has things that she's no good at. She remarked that Mihari ended up getting a super cute, girly outfit today and asks her if that's the kind of thing she likes. Mihari says that it is what her older brother likes, explaining that they were going on a trip together soon and that she wanted something for it. Kaede understood and remarked that she's sure that he'd like it. Mihari said that she hoped so. Back at home, Mihari tried on her new cute outfit and looked at herself in the mirror. She wondered if it was cute, but also thought that looking at it in the comfort of her own home, it looked a little over the top. She wondered if she could wear it in public, and decided that she'd die of embarrassment. She decided that she couldn't wear it on the trip and banished it to the bottom of her closet.

Around this time, Mihari began to excel at academics and sports, placing first in her class at the end of her first semester of middle school. By the end of her time in middle school, she had set multiple records in sporting events such as track and field that remain unbroken to this day. Although she was doing all of this to get more praise from Mahiro, all this success had a detrimental effect on him. He soon began to feel inferior due to being negatively compared to her despite her being younger than him, and subsequently began to make less and less time for her. Mihari failed to notice this however, and continued to work even harder in the hopes of being able to spend more time with Mahiro.

Shortly before Mihari started high school, Matsuri accepted a long-term overseas assignment for her company and moved overseas, leaving her and Mahiro by themselves, though she supposedly sent money back for rent and groceries so the two could get by.

On Mihari's first day of high school, she was delighted by how she looked in her uniform and went to Mahiro's room to get him to see her in it. By this point he was already isolating himself with a 'KEEP OUT' sign on the door, and received no response when she tried to talk to him. Mihari started to get worried about Mahiro, as she missed him and wanted to find a way to help him.

While walking to school, Kaede made an offhand remark to Mihari about how using makeup and wearing fashionable outfits can make someone look good and improve their self confidence. This gave Mihari the idea to turn Mahiro into a girl. She then realized that if there was no opportunity for progress, there would be no results. Thus, she got the idea to de-age Mahiro as well. From that moment, her goal was clear: to turn Mahiro into a young girl to reintegrate him into society.

Realizing that she needed funding and research in order to do this, she took several tests that allowed her to skip high school and go straight to college at the nearby Yotsuba University. There, she focused on biology and chemistry where she started the project by developing a drug that would turn Mahiro into a young girl.

The project eventually caught the eye of Mihari's faculty advisor Chitose Azuma, who made key contributions to perfecting the drug. Although Mihari believed that she did this out of the goodness of her heart, in actuality Chitose has a secret agenda that she wants to see carried out through the project as well.

The night before the events of "Mahiro's Confusing New Body", Mihari slipped the drug into Mahiro's food (drink in the anime) to commence with the project. That night as Mahiro slept, the drug transformed him into a middle-school aged girl.

History[]

Etymology[]

  • Her first name, Mihari, means "lookout" (見張り) (mihari). The name also shares the same consonants with her brother/sister's name, Mahiro.[3]
  • Her last name, Oyama, means "string" (緒) (o) and "mountain" (山) (yama) when literally interpreted. According to the author Nekotofu, the name comes from oyama, a term in kabuki that refers to male actors who play female roles.[3]

Trivia[]

  • In the original Japanese version, Mihari refers to herself as わたし (watashi), a common first-person pronoun which is typically used by women.
  • Mihari calls Mahiro "onii-chan" (お兄ちゃん), which is a somewhat cute and casual way of calling one's older brother, if there is nobody else around. When there is somebody else hearing their conversation (also when she pokes fun at Mahiro's becoming more and more feminine), she avoids calling her so and instead uses "Mahiro-chan" (まひろちゃん) so that she doesn't create confusion.
